Filming has begun for the new Dungeons and Dragons movie

Initial filming has officially begun on the set of the new Dungeons and Dragons movie.

A tweet from director Jonathan Goldstein on May 1 shows the clapperboard for the very first take of a scene on the eagerly-anticipated film. The date in the corner reads April 29, 2021.

Goldstein fittingly captioned the tweet “The campaign begins.”

The news comes just a few weeks after it was announced by Paramount that the Dungeons and Dragons movie was among a number of upcoming projects to be postponed, likely due to complications arising from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Variety reported on April 9 that Dungeons and Dragons was among 10 films that would see delayed released dates, including Top Gun: Maverick, Mission: Impossible 7, and Jackass 4.

The D&D movie was originally expected to hit theaters on May 27, 2022, and has now been postponed to a March 3, 2023 opening.

While it may be just under two more years until we see the popular TTRPG find its way (back) onto the big screen, we’re just happy to see that the project is well underway.

Casting announcements so far have included the names of Hugh Grant, Sophia Lillis, Rege-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Michelle Rodriguez, and Chris Pine.

HASBRO also noted that it has “engaged several writers to develop premium television projects designed as a foundation for a new robust brand universe.”
