HASBRO may have a new Dungeons and Dragons TV series in the works

It’s been about three decades since the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon went off the air, but it may only be a few years before another TV series takes its place.

HASBRO, the entertainment conglomerate and parent of D&D’s own Wizards of the Coast, revealed in its 2021 Investor Event on Thursday that it’s eyeing a Dungeons and Dragons TV series.

The Hasbro Outlines Strategic Growth Drivers at Virtual Investor Event Unveils New Segment Reporting document gives an update on the Dungeons and Dragons movie, which has recently announced some additions to the cast including Bridgerton’s Regé-Jean PageStar Trek’s Chris Pine, Detective Pikachu’s Justice Smith, and Fast and Furious’ Michelle Rodriguez.

“The integrated and assembled value of consumer products, Wizards and digital gaming, and
entertainment is how we unlock the next level of return for our business and for our stakeholders,”
said Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s chairman and chief executive officer, in the document.

“We have simplified our structure to maximize our growth and provide a clearer view to the drivers of Hasbro revenues, profit, margin, and cash generation.”

The document notes that the D&D film “is preparing to start principal photography in Ireland,” which puts it well on its way to making that expected May 22 release date.

We were also surprised to see a note underneath the D&D movie update in the same document, which states that HASBRO has “engaged several writers to develop premium television projects designed as a foundation for a new robust brand universe.”

Color us intrigued.

We’re assuming that any D&D TV series will likely come following the potential success of 2022’s Dungeons and Dragons movie, and given the cast and crew so far announced, we think it’s reasonable to get our hopes up that the new film will far surpass 2000’s lukewarm attempt at bringing the game onto the big screen.

Adding to the excitement is HASBRO’s note that Dungeons and Dragons revenue is up 33% in 2020, marking an all time record for the company.

Magic: The Gathering also saw a record year, up 23% in 2020. Wizards of the Coast, as a whole, saw its own revenue hit $813M, and is “approximately halfway to achieving its target of doubling its revenue from 2018 to 2023.”

Suffice it to say that Dungeons and Dragons isn’t going to be lacking in new material any time soon.
