D&D’s Adventure League dropping controversial character creation rule

Adventure League players just got a few more options when it comes to character creation.

The official Dungeons and Dragons campaign league from Wizards of the Coast follows a series of set rules to ensure that all Adventure League games can coexist amicably with one another, as table-specific house rules simply would not work for a campaign that encompasses thousands of players, DMs, and tables.

One of the long-standing rules when it came to character creation for these games was the Player’s Handbook +1 rule, which limits players to using only the Players Handbook plus one other official sourcebook when creating their PC.

However, Wizards of the Coast’s Adventure League Team announced earlier this week that they would be officially doing away with the rule in favor of allowing for material to be pulled from a wider variety of official sourcebooks.

“These new guidelines aim to balance player agency over their character’s rules options with rules that are intuitive and easy for DMs and players to communicate,” the WotC announcement states.

“Originally, the ‘PH + 1’ rule was established to maintain character balance, since new rules options were only being playtested with the assumption a player only possessed a Player’s Handbook. However, as we’ve seen, most players use rules unfettered by these constraints.”

This change comes within a week after the announcement of upcoming sourcebook, Van Ritchen’s Guide to Ravenloftwhich is expected to include Gothic Lineages — a set of rules that are currently in the UA that allow for players to change up their racial traits and features.

The WotC announcement states that current Adventure League players will be allowed one rebuild using all options available to their specific campaigns, as there may still be some sourcebook limitations set depending on what Adventure League module their party is running.
