Wizards of the Coast announced today that they have big plans to rebrand Dungeons and Dragons for their highly anticipated 6th edition of the game.
An April 1 release from WotC states that, while they’ve decided to stick with the well known D&D moniker, they will be replacing “Dungeons” with “Dangers” to start out fresh for the next edition.

“It just makes more sense,” said WotC president Chris Cocks, in the release. “Because really, how often are people actually adventuring into dungeons these days? It made sense for previous editions, but the slow, exhausting dungeon-crawling won’t really be a thing in 6e.”
The decision was met with immediate backlash from fans, who stated on Twitter that their favorite game was “once again being ruined by cancel culture.”
“What’s next? No more dragons?” asked Twitter user @420blazeitlmao on Thursday. “The changes that are being made here are threatening my own fragile sense of identity and it is making me scared and therefore angry.”
The release noted that the removal of “Dungeons” was an attempt to move away from the incorrect — though often-made — association between the collaborative game and the BDSM community, due largely in part to the much-used term “Dungeon Master.”
Another user wrote that he would be boycotting 6th edition entirely, and instead sticking to 5e and earlier editions.
“We don’t really care,” said Cocks in response to the backlash. “You all get that you’re still giving us your money, regardless of which edition you buy, right? And, I mean, this game as a whole is about being imaginative and coming up with your own ways to play — so why anyone is getting this angry about some small, surface level changes we’ve made to keep the game consistent with modern times is honestly beyond me.”
The release also noted that the new edition of the game would do away with alignment entirely, as it was “kind of a broken system to begin with,” and instead will simply have players determine where their characters fall on the moral and lawful spectrums by taking the Myers Briggs personality test in-character.
Dangers and Dragons 6e is expected to be released exactly one year from now, on April Fools Day, 2022.
