If you’ve been looking to start a new D&D module, but you don’t want to break the bank, you’re in luck.
To celebrate D20 day (AKA December 20, AKA the most important day of the year), Wizards of the Coast announced that they would be making a preview of the module Dragon of Icespire Peak free to download for all with a decent enough wifi connection.

“For “d20 Day”, we’re pleased to offer play groups further adventure material to help celebrate this holiday season,” a statement from WotC reads.
“The following download contains a special preview version of material presented in the D&D Essentials Kit. This short adventure material, characters, and other supplemental information should get a group started on their journey!”
Dragon of Icespire Peak made its first appearance in the Essentials Kit, released on September 3, 2019. Not to be confused with the Starter Set (shoutout to anyone who’s first foray into D&D happened in the ol Cragmaw Hideout), the Essentials Kit includes the full Dragon of Icespire Peak adventure module, a DM screen, character cards, an abridged version of the Players’ Handbook, and more.
The abridged version of Dragon of Icespire Peak can be downloaded from the Wizards of the Coast’s website, and looks to include the entire Gnomengarde quest, along with statblocks of creatures you could encounter, a handful of pre-generated level 1 characters, a few magic items, and some ideas of where to go from there.
It might not be an experienced group’s cup of tea, but it makes for the perfect little bundle for DMs trying to get new groups into the game, or friends who just want to try this D&D thing out without having to pay for anything.
…Though this old DM still can’t help but see Phandalin as stop #1 for a solid D&D career.
