The divide between generations of D&D players can be boiled down to one iconic villain.
For the older generation, they remember Vecna as a powerful foe, originally showing up in the World of Greyhawk campaign, and appearing intermittently in official publications in the 2nd, 3rd, and 3.5th editions of the game.

For those a little younger (and who are caught up on their Netflix binges), Vecna is best known as the main antagonist in the most recent Stranger Things season — seeing as the villain has not been featured any more heavily than as a diety or the owner of a few choice artifacts in 5e.
(Okay, okay, before the legions of Critters jump down my throat, he was featured somewhat significantly in the first season Critical Role, but we’re talking official material here.)
All that to say: Vecna is back in a big way, baby.
Likely due to the hype caused by Stranger Things, Wizards of the Coast has released “The Vecna Dossier” as of today, allowing players and DMs alike the chance to “uncover the dark secrets behind the iconic archlich Vecna and get the exclusive stat block for use in your D&D game! All you need to claim the dossier is a D&D Beyond account,” according to a post by D&D Beyond Staff earlier this afternoon.
The dossier includes a sizeable description of the archlich, as well as a seriously vile wondrous item and a full stat block.
Access to the dossier can be claimed between now and June 16, and as we mentioned earlier, you’ll need a D&D account to do so.
Find it here.
We’re tempted to just screenshot and post the stat block here (aaaand maybe we will as of June 17), but for now we figure it’s best to stay on the good side of our friends over at D&D Beyond and our man Vecna himself.
But what we can say is: This Challenge twenty-freaking-six stat block is no joke.
Here’s hoping your party has an easier time of handling him than our good pals in Hawkins have had so far — just be sure to keep Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill at the ready.
