Brand new Unearthed Arcana introduces draconic race options

A brand new Unearthed Arcana just dropped from Wizards of the Coast.

The third UA of 2021, the Draconic Options doc follows in the footsteps of the previous two UAs (Folks of the Feywild and Gothic Lineages) further expanding race options for D&D 5e.

Race Options

The Draconic Options UA offers an expansion on dragonborn race options, including the choice of Chromatic, Metallic, or Gem dragonborn, which all bring with them specific breath weapons, resistances, and abilities.

Chromatic Dragonborn can choose from Acid, Lightning, Poison, Fire, and Cold for their breath weapon/resistance. They also gain Chromatic Warding at 3rd level, allowing for 10 minutes of immunity to the chosen damage type.

Metallic Dragonborn choose from Fire, Lightning, Acid, or Cold damage for their breath weapon/resistance. They receive a second breath weapon at 3rd level, which results in either creatures in the area being pushed 20 feet and knocked prone if they fail a Strenth save, or become incapacitated upon failing a Con saving throw.

Gem dragonborn choose from Force, Radiant, Psychic, Thunder, or Necrotic damage/resistance, can speak telepathically to creatures within 30 feet, and can summon a spectral gen at 3rd level that allows for one minute of flight per long rest.

The UA also expands on kobolds as a race option, stating that “kobolds display their draconic ancestry in the glint of their scales and in their roars. Legends tell of the first kobolds emerging from the Underdark near the lairs of the earliest dragons.”

The UA Kobold race is a small humanoid with a walking speed of 30, has Darkvision out to 60 feet, and come with a Draconic Legacy, allowing for one of the following options (chosen at character creation):

  • Advantage on saving throws to avoid or end the frightened condition
  • One cantrip from the Sorcerers spell list (can use Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma as the spellcasting ability but must be chosen at character creation)
  • Unarmed strikes with tail deal 1d6+Strength mod bludgeoning damage

UA Kobolds also have a Draconic Roar, which gives you and allies advantage on attack rolls against enemies who heard it (within 10 feet) until the end of your next turn.

Feats

The new Unearthed Arcana also included three new feats; Gift of the Chromatic Dragon, Gift of the Metallic Dragon, and Gift of the Gem Dragon, which can be taken by any class or race.

Gift of the Chromatic Dragon allows for martial weapons to be infused with either acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison, allowing for an extra 1d4 of that damage type on a hit for the next minute.

The feat also offers the ability to use a reaction to gain resistance to acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison damage.

Gift of the Metallic Dragon gives the Cure Wounds spell as well as a d4 bonus to the AC of an ally on a reaction when they are hit.

Gift of the Gem Dragon increases Int, Wis, or Cha by 1, as well as the ability to force a Strength saving throw on a creature that deals you damage within 10 feet of you. If the attacker fails the save, they take 2d8 force damage and are pushed 10 feet away. The ability can be used a number of times equal to proficiency bonus and spent uses are restored with long rests.

Spells

Finally, the UA brings seven new spells to the game.

The 7th level Draconic Transformation allows the caster to turn into a draconic being, gaining a fly speed, a breath weapon, and blindsight.

Fizban’s Platinum Shield, a 6th level spell, creates a movable shield that offers half cover, resistance to acid, cold, fire, lightning, and poison damage, and Evasion for Dex saves.

The 3rd level spell Flame Stride increases movement by 20 feet, immunity from Opportunity Attacks, and 1d6 fire damage to creatures within 5 feet of your movement.

Icingdeath’s Frost is a 2nd level evocation that creates a 30-foot cone of 3d8 cold damage on a failed Con saving throw. Affected creatures are also covered in ice and must use an action to free itself.

Nathair’s Mischief, a 2nd level illusion, fills a 20 foot cube with fey or draconic magic, to be determined by a roll on a Mischievous Surge table. Possible effects include charming, blinding, or incapacitating all caught within the cube (upon failed saves).

The 4th level spell Raulothin’s Psychic Lance creates a 10d6 lance of power at one creature within range upon a failed Int saving throw. If it hits, the target is also incapacitated until the start of your next turn.

Finally, Summon Draconic Spirit is a 5th level conjuration spell that calls forth a draconic spirit that acts as an ally, has its own AC, HP, speed, resistances, attacks, and breath weapon.

Wizards of the Coast plans to release a survey in the wake of the new UA allowing playtesters the chance to offer their insights into the new race options, feats, and spells.
