Here’s what to expect from the upcoming Candlekeep Mysteries book

A new Dungeons and Dragons 5e book is hitting game store shelves this March.

The newest publication from Wizards of the Coast, Candlekeep Mysteries, shakes things up by being neither a full module nor a new rulebook.

Instead, the book features seventeen standalone adventures that are designed for characters at levels 1 through 16, states Wizards of the Coast.

“Each adventure begins with the discovery of a book, and each book is the key to a door behind which danger and glory await,” the book’s write up states.

“These adventures can be run as one-shot games, plugged into an existing Forgotten Realms campaign, or adapted for other campaign settings.”

This is great news for DMs who may have taken their party through a starter module, like Lost Mines of Phandelver or Dragon of Icespire Peak, and are now looking for some published content to use without committing to a full module.

This book will be particularly handy for DMs who often run one-shot adventures for newer players.

All 17 adventures are expected to feature a mystery to be solved.

“Candlekeep attracts scholars like a flame attracts moths. Historians, sages, and others who crave knowledge flock to this library fortress to peruse its vast collection of books, scribbled into which are the answers to the mysteries that bedevil them,” states WotC.

The book includes a poster map of Candlekeep fortress and information about those who reside within its halls.

Those opting for the alternative cover will be treated to this red and gold gem:

Jeremy Crawford, the principle rules designer for Dungeons and Dragons, wrote in January 12 tweet that the book “contains three things I love: books, bite-sized adventures, and the rich storytelling of a wonderfully diverse group of writers.”

That list of writers includes Graeme Barber, Kelly Lynne D’angelo, Alison Huang, Mark Hulmes, Jennifer Kretchmer, Daniel Kwan, Adam Lee, Ari Levitch, Sarah Madsen, Christopher Perkins, Michael Polkinghorn, Taymoor Rehman, Derek Ruiz, Kienna Shaw, Brandes Stoddard, Amy Vorpahl, and Toni Winslow-Brill.

Candlekeep Mysteries retails for $50, and those hoping to get their hands on it ASAP can preorder on Amazon and save 30% — dropping the price down to $35. Preorders are also available at your local gaming stores and through Barnes & NobleBooks-a-Million, D&D BeyondFantasy Grounds, and Roll20.
