If you want your Dungeons and Dragons players to get an energy boost, one of the best ways to them excited is with some great background music!
Finding the right album/artist for your session can be hard, however — so I’m going to share a few of my favorites to give ya’ll a place to start:
- Check these out:
Really Slow Motion
RSM is a great soundtrack artist for any occasion (I use them when I’m writing), and they’ve been active for almost a decade.
They have a large variety of albums with various instruments and slightly different tones, but for the most part, the music is very epic and grand.
If you’re looking for more intense battle/encounter music, I would recommend the albums Iron Poetry and Existensia. For less intense tracks, I would suggest Battle Angel.
Audiomachine
This music has a lot of beat and passion, which is perfect for fights. My personal favorite track is Our Heroes Return from the album Cinematix.
All of these songs are very suspenseful and concentrated, which is super fun for tense battles.
The Kaladin album by The Black Piper
The most diverse grouping of music I’ll suggest here. It was originally written to accompany an epic fantasy novel, so there’s a healthy mix of battle music and emotional songs. It’s also just a great listen!
Emily Axford
A familiar name to many of us, Emily Axford writes music for (as well as plays in) Not Another D&D Podcast. The music is really great for D&D because it was written specifically for D&D.
She has released two albums of her music so far, Tales from the Crick and The Galaderon Saga, and these albums are really great for more emotional or social scenes; they’re a little more chill than the other music I’ve mentioned, and they also loop really easily!

You can find all of this music on YouTube, Spotify, and pretty much wherever else you get your music. Hopefully this gave you a good place to start picking your background sounds!
